Queen Marie's Romantic Retreat
While the Dracula legend draws crowds, the castle's most significant resident was Queen Marie of Romania, granddaughter of Queen Victoria. In 1920, the city of Brașov gifted her the castle, which she lovingly restored and transformed from a stark fortress into a warm, enchanting royal summer residence. She filled its rooms with Romanian art and crafts, added a secret stone staircase, and created a beautiful English-style park at the foot of the castle.
As you wander through the timber-framed rooms, you are walking in the footsteps of this remarkable queen. Her personal touch is everywhere, from the cozy bedrooms to the music room where she entertained guests. It was her favorite home, and upon her death in 1938, her heart was interred in a special chapel here, a testament to her deep love for Bran Castle.
